Two of the most monumental piano sonatas are brought to the stage by pianist Chris Cartner.
Beethoven’s ‘Appassionata’ (meaning ‘passionate’) is a work which sums up the depth of his personality: a world-changing sonata of humanity, rage, love and deep emotional impact.
The second half of this one-hour programme features the
F minor piano sonata by Brahms. Truly a ‘symphony for the piano’, the work contains arguably some of the greatest melodic material of the 19th Century. From its devastating opening, through a profoundly beautiful second movement and a wild ‘scherzo’, the finale is almost cinematic in scope. The sonata remains one of the highlights of the entire piano repertoire.
