Ian Sykes

Ian Sykes studied at the University of Newcastle with Margery Smith, graduating with a Bachelor of Music (first class honours). Subsequent studies have included a Master of Music (performance) degree with Catherine McCorkill at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and private lessons in Australia and London.

 

Ian is a busy freelance musician, dividing his time between chamber and orchestral music, music theatre and pedagogy.

 

Ian has performed in productions of Mary Poppins – The Musical, Phantom of the Opera, South Pacific and Beyond Desire and has toured Australia with Michael Crawford and West Side Story 2010. 

 

He has performed with Sydney Philharmonia’s Festival Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, The Metropolitan Orchestra, Sydney Youth Orchestra, NSW Police Band as well as the education programs for Musica Viva and Sydney Opera House. 

 

Ian is a founding member of Sirius Chamber Ensemble, a group that explores music for winds and strings from the classical and modern periods, including premieres of new compositions by local composers including Alan Holley, Christine Draeger, Paul Smith, Nigel Ubrihien and Spike Mason.
