"Magical and mysterious French masterpieces for the clarinet"
Our guest instrumentalist for this month is clarinetist Ian Sykes, who joins pianist Chris Cartner for a programme of seductive and stirring music from France. From the luscious, late-romantic sonata by Saint-Saëns to the playful ‘Duo Concertante’ by Darius Milhaud, the centrepiece in this enticing bill is Poulenc’s haunting and brilliant Sonata for Clarinet and Piano. The work (premiered in 1963 by Benny Goodman and Leonard Bernstein) features music of extraordinary tenderness alongside Poulenc’s typically boisterous musical personality. Don’t miss this exotic line-up of the very finest of French woodwind music, followed by complimentary drinks.
